Heating wood or other organic matter in a gasifyer is done to release the volatile elements within the wood. The gasses produced can be used in an engine to make power or just burned in a heating system. The simplest element of the gasifier is that is a container that is insulated to hold in the heat.

within this container is a small-scale bed of burning fuel. Outside air is allowed through to the bed of fuel creating a controlled burn, and starting the creation of gas.

This makes the whole operation self contained.

Having a small controlled fire burning with limited oxygen is not only efficient, but just setting fire to the whole mass of fuel is not. The heating produced is also used to dry up and heat the wood chips, so that as they go down into the grate they are in the ideal status to replace the burned mass. Realistically the fire should reach approximately 1200 degrees F. The top of the cylinder has a pipe that allows the combustion gasses to escape. They are then filtered to get rid of particles, and cooled since a denser gas has more energy.

Some of the main advantages of the gasifyer is it can be made small enough to be self contained and moveable, on a trailer or trolley. An oil drum sized producer should be able to operate a small four cylinder engine, and the gas from a mediocre fuel is as good as that from an costly one.

Any combination of chipped wood and or branches, rice or corn husks, shells, pits, animal dung, in truth any waste organic material, can be used. Even rapid growing willow may be planted as a fuel crop.

 This not only is a fresh source of fuel, but because commercial agribusiness makes massive amounts of waste organic product, all of which costs cash to get rid of, but also land fill is reduced.
