How Solar Panels Generate Power
Today, energy rates continue to soar all over the world. Almost every newscast will tell you that this situation is derived greatly from the rising cost of crude oil. Petroleum based energy is utilized in many regions of the world in order to operate lighting, fuel vehicles, and perform numerous other daily operations. For some time now, many countries have sought alternative energy sources to lessen their dependence on oil. One of the first of these sources was solar energy, and much of its production is achieved via solar panels. How do solar panels work?
Sometimes referred to as photovoltaic modules or photovoltaic panels, solar panels usually are grouped together in order to form a system. A single panel often cannot produce enough electricity to fully power what it needs to, and that is why systems are created. Solar cells make up each panel, and these modules are interconnected. As the panel collects photons from the sun, the cells convert them to usable energy, most often electricity. Wafer-form cells are often constructed of crystalline silicon, while thin-film cells are usually made from cadmium telluride.
The solar cells form an electric current from the sunlight which is then carried away via wires connected to them. These conductive wires consist of silver, copper, or some other metal that conducts electricity, but is not magnetic. The solar cells must be connected to one another and to the other components of the system in order to facilitate an unbroken energy conduit. These electrical connections occur in series so that the proper output voltage is achieved, which then supports the current capacity that has been decided upon.
Other forms of solar collectors consist of troughs. Theses are constructed as concave mirrors that focus the sun’s rays via the curvature of the lenses, guiding it to tubes that run the length of the mirror. These tubes are filled with a conductive liquid that transfers the energy along the line and into a power station that then delivers the energy out to the grid or nearby buildings that feed off of it. Both solar panels and mirrors are used for heat generation as well as electricity.
The most attractive element of solar panels is that they produce electricity and heat by means of a limitless and free energy source; the sun. Only the motors that shift the troughs and panels in order to gather the optimum amount of sunlight use external electricity, and that quantity is negligible. It is a clean energy source without emissions, and solar panels cost next to nothing to operate.
